Celebrating Accessible Design     

Today, Sunday July 26 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) turns 30! 

The ADA is civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public.

The law has had a major impact on design and construction practices and great strides have been made to include all people with disabilities. Did you know that ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) members played an instrumental role and were part of the team of subject experts that drafted the Act in 1990? The design industry provided an eye towards inclusion, leveraging the profession’s innovative problem-solving to create safer, accessible, and comfortable space for all.

Interior Designers value that accessibility is a fundamental right and strive to ensure that everyone, no matter what their ability level might be, can experience the value of accessibility.

Using evidence-based and human-centric design, Interior Designers provide solutions and designs to ensure comfort, accessibility, safety, sustainability, and wellness. Abiding by science and data, building codes and regulatory standards, designs are created to ensure the space we work, live, and play in impacts us in a positive, and functional way.

All public spaces must comply with the ADA, often ensuring that we have an open-concept, single story plan. Wide doorways and hallways and accessible counters and work surfaces are but a few elements that need to be included. Furthermore, having access to switches and smart technology provides the means for a disabled person to continue living independently.

Many of the elements of the ADA have been further researched and adapted for home life. In residential design, Interior Designers now include accessible design (also known as Universal Design) in the designs of more functional, accessible, and practical spaces. This includes, among others, the inclusion of energy efficiency appliances and materials, curb-less showers, easy access switches, smart technology features, lighting updates, access into the home and sometimes, even changing a multiple level home into single level living.
