Candles at Christmastime

by Beppie Mostert on December 19, 2013

According to the History of Christmas, candles were an important source of heat and light during the darkness of the winter solstice. From the humble beginnings of the pagan practice by theĀ  Romans, who lit candles to ward off evil and encourage the sun to shine again, candles became an essential part of the Christmas tradition of lighting candles in homes and churches.

During the Victorian era, candles represented good will and concern and were placed in the windows to welcome passersby that they were welcome to the shelter and warmth provided.

To Christians around the world, candles symbolize Jesus Christ as the Light of the World.
